Right now, I am struggling to keep up with the influx of emails flooding into my inbox from artists and partner organisations. It's fantastic! We have so much interest for this Festival, and not a week passes without someone else wanting to become involved. The community is being really generous and it's great, though it does become hard for us to remain judicious about what is included while ensuring that people who are offering their participation for free still feel appreciated.
We've been having a bit of success with other interns this week as well. We had taken on board a web design intern, who is really committed and a lovely person, but her designs just weren't working for us and we had no idea how to help her take it further. Yesterday we had a meeting with the head of a local web/ app/ SEO design company that specialises in the arts, and he agreed to 'sponsor' us by mentoring him. It's a great deal for him, because he gets his logo all over everything and we're giving him an extra person to do the work!
We're also lucky enough to have engaged the students at a local uni to design the branding for the Festival, which is something we've really been struggling with. A lecturer at the uni is pretty excited about the Festival, so he's actually made designing a brand for us an assessable task, which is amazing! Hopefully we should have something in four weeks' time, which is still a lot longer away than I would like in terms of rolling out the media strategy and so on, but it's probably the best we can do.
Another excellent thing happened this week - our primary sponsor came through with an extra and much needed $10K for us, which is just wonderful. We're still about $20K short of our minimum target, but hopefully the other feelers we've put out will 'come good'. It would be amazing if we could just do everything we want to do.
I'm definitely feeling a real sense of excitement now. There are a couple of administrative things I need to see to - drafting letters of agreement for the artists and interns, contacting some people I haven't been able to get a hold of, but I feel like it's going really well and like I'm on top of it. My boss and I also talked about the difficulty of fitting everything in within one-hour fortnightly meetings, and I said I would think about how this could be done more effectively over the weekend. Thanks goodness we're getting an extra hour tomorrow, because short of having an agenda and sticking to it like clockwork I haven't got a clue!
Sounds so exciting! This is such invaluable experience for you. I can't believe you have your logo design as an assessable task at a uni - way to go!
ReplyDeleteI agree with Anna, getting the marketing / branding students at a uni to come on board as interns in a sort of way is just genius! You get some great, fresh, original ideas and dont have to pay commercial rates.
ReplyDeleteI'm also really happy to read about how much support you are getting from the community. I guess there are always challenges in 1. being judicious and not accepting every offer and 2. expressing appreciation for the contributions large and small.
